The death penalty for drug peddlers is a suggestion made by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).  ,
Only harsh penalties, in the opinion of the agency’s director general, will stop peddlers, especially when it causes children’s deaths.
“Somebody bought children’s medicine for N13, 000 or something like that, another person was selling about N3, 000 in the same mall”, the NAFDAC chief said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s , The Morning Brief.  ,
“That raised an alarm. Guess what? When we tested the medicine in our Kaduna lab, there was nothing inside. So, I want the death penalty.
Because you can kill a child by putting a gun on the head of the child before doing so. Just give that child bad medicine, “Adeyeye said.

No “No Strict Measures”

The NAFDAC DG is also requesting the National Assembly’s and the judiciary’s cooperation in implementing this plan. She claims that the organization is open to working with lawmakers and other interested parties on the issue.
” You cannot fight substandard, falsified medicine in isolation. The agency can do as much as it can but if there is no deterrent, there’s going to be a problem, “she said.
Who doesn’t know that someone who went to the ATM and received N250, 000 or 225mg of Tramadol, who was brought in to kill anyone, fry the brain, and sentence them to five years in prison or N250, 000?
“That is part of our problem. There are no strict measures to deter]people] from repeating the same thing. We can do everything, but we will have a problem if our legal system is weak or the judiciary is weak enough to stand up for what we can.
” So, our judiciary system must be strong enough. However, we are working closely with the National Assembly to impose severe penalties.  , But if you kill a child by bad medicine, you deserve to die, “she said.

‘ We are short-staffed ‘

Adeyeye criticized the agency’s lack of staff, saying that while NAFDAC has a lot to do, it also has a lot to do to stop drug trafficking.
She believes with about 2, 000 staff members nationwide and limited funding, NAFDAC is constrained in carrying out its activities.
