Murray Braced For Djokovic Ire In Coaching Debut At Australian Open
With the “unique opportunity” to coach him worth it, Andy Murray claims that he is prepared to be subject to Novak Djokovic’s ire in pressure situations at the Australian Open.
Just months after the Scot called it quits on his playing career, Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, made the shocking choice to work for Murray in November.
The call, according to Murray, who has known Djokovic since their junior days, came out of nowhere in his first comments since then.
“I said to him: ‘ Look, I need to think about it and talk to my family, ‘” the BBC quoted Murray as saying.
“So I spoke with them, and after a few days, I concluded that it was an entirely new opportunity and experience.
I “thought it would be a good idea to try it.”
Murray is himself a three-time major winner — and five-time finalist in Australia — with both players members of the so-called” Big Four”, along with Rafael Nadal, who retired last year, and Roger Federer, who left the sport in 2022.
The Serb won 25 of the 36 matches Djokovic and Murray have faced in their careers.
Both men are known for sounding off at their boxes during pressure situations in 19 of those fights, which occurred in finals.
Murray might be in the receiving position this time.
He’s going to want to vent toward his team and his box, Murray said, “I know it’s not easy out there.”
I’m completely okay with him expressing his own feelings in any way, provided that he’s putting in his best effort and working as hard as he can.
 , Unique perspective
Djokovic said Murray inspired him and he was enjoying the collaboration.
The Serbian star said on Friday, “I think his unique perspective on my game is the fact that he has played me for 25 years.
He knows how my game has evolved, and I can guess its flaws and strengths.
Because he recently retired as a player, he also knows the game, the tennis game, of the biggest players currently playing.
” I’m excited to start the tournament with him, “he added.
Murray made it clear he was not in town for a vacation while Djokovic was chasing an 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th major.
” At times it’s very enjoyable. He said that high performance is not meant to be making up for it with jokes and impromptu.
” In all the times I’ve been on tour, I haven’t seen that from any of the best players in the world.
“I’ve seen it from some of the lower-ranked players, and that’s one of the reasons why they’re not there”.
