Michael Ball says there is one surprising singer he’s banned from playing on Radio 2
MICHAEL Ball is prohibited from radio playback of his songs. Following the sudden passing of former host Steve Wright, 69, earlier this year, the West End singer has taken over the duties of hosting Radio 2’s Sunday Love Songs.
When asked if he would be playing any of his own romantic tunes from his 40-year musical career, such as Love Changes Everything, he said, “I’m forbidden, and I’m not Elaine Paige.” Can you imagine.. ‘ And that was yours truly… ‘ It would be wrong though and it wouldn’t feel right. I wouldn’t play my own songs. I might sneak one in once a year or once every Christmas.
Michael, who is 62 and has just released a new novel called A Backstage Betrayal, admits he had to think ‘ ‘ long and hard ‘ ‘ before he accepted taking over Wright’s old job fronting Sunday Love Songs. He added: “I had to think long and hard. First of all, we were still reeling from losing Steve because it shocked everyone. The controller then approached me a few months after he passed and said, “We’d love you to consider doing this. ” I thought, “Can I do this. Is it right for me to do this? ‘
” But I thought Steve would approve. We got on really well and we had a good relationship. I believed it was crucial to continue watching Love Songs rather than simply altering the show. I wanted to expand on that by referring to the “appointment to listen” section of radio, which allows the listener to truly be a part of the show.
Michael, who is dating Cathy McGowan, is preparing to release his sixth album, Together At Home, with Alfie Boe. The pair are close friends. And he enjoys making fun of the married tenor by making up their real lives as a couple.
He told the Yeovil Literary Festival:” I am forever winding Alfie up about this and he is mortified. We’ll check into a hotel, and I’ll say, “Oh, we’ve got separate rooms.” ‘. “
In Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera as Raoul, Michael made a name for himself in the West End in the middle of the 1980s. However, he made his most notable appearance in 1989 with the lead performance in Charles Hart’s Aspects of Love, starring Don Black and Charles Hart. With the musical Love Changes Everything, he became a number two hit in the pop charts.
Later, Ball appeared in The Woman In White, Sunset Boulevard, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the West End. He won the Grammy Award for his song One Step Out of Time in 1992 at Eurovision as the UK’s representative.
He has recorded 20 solo albums and is a very successful recording artist as a result. He was hired in 2008 to host Michael Ball’s Sunday Brunch after his popularity gained favor with Radio 2 bosses. The Michael Ball Show and Sunday Night With Michael Ball followed, and he made his debut with The Michael Ball Show on Sunday in 2013.
Since 1992, Ball has been dating Cathy McGowan, who was a former Ready Steady Go host, but they have never wed. A daughter, Emma, is hers.
