On Monday’s transfer deadline day, Manchester City made the biggest signing of the summer, signing Porto’s Nico Gonzalez, while Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich sent on loan to Tottenham.
In a 5-1 thrashing at Arsenal on Sunday, City’s midfield woes were exposed in a 5-1 victory over Arsenal. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is out for the season with a serious knee injury.
Pep Guardiola’s men find themselves in a battle just to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with the defending champions sitting fifth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool.
In addition, City needed reinforcements for a massive Champions League play-off round match against Real Madrid later this month.
Former Barcelona midfielder Gonzalez, 23, arrives for a reported fee of 60 million euros (£50 million, $62 million).

“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career”, said Gonzalez.
“I’m aware of Pep’s reputation, and I’m eager to work with him.” In fact, I am honoured he wants me to play in his team”.
Omar Marmoush and Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov, both of whom City have already spent more than £120 million in January, have already attracted more than £120 million.

Tottenham were busy in the final hours of the window as they bolstered Ange Postecoglou’s injury-ravaged squad.
Following a 50 million deal with the German giants, Tel reportedly turned down the chance to join Spurs earlier in the window.
The French under-21 international has since agreed to stay in North London until the end of the season, with the option to make the move permanent in the summer.
Spurs, though, were frustrated in their bid to add more defensive recruits on deadline day.
Marc Guehi, who has just 18 months until the end of his contract at Selhurst Park, was offered a £70 million bid, according to the BBC.
Axel Disasi, a Chelsea player, had been linked with moving across London, but he ended up joining Aston Villa, whose move was only confirmed two hours after the window closed.
With the loan signing of Marco Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain, Villa also increased its firepower.
After Jhon Duran left for Saudi side Al Nassr, the Spaniard replaces Marcus Rashford as Unai Emery’s forward line. He has won three Champions League titles with Real Madrid.
However, neither Manchester United, one of the Premier League’s struggling clubs, nor Liverpool and Arsenal, had deadline-day deals in place.
After Villa turned down an offer for England international Ollie Watkins last week, Arsenal’s attempt to strengthen their forward line seems to have failed.
Following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, United manager Ruben Amorim stated that the club was “trying everything” to “improve the team without making mistakes of the past.”
The Red Devils are cautious about breaking profit and sustainability regulations, and Tel’s move reportedly was turned off by Bayern’s request for a loan fee.
Late on deadline day, the Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Burkinabe central defender Nasser Djiga and Zimbabwe international midfielder Marshall Munetsi.
The 28-year-old Munetsi, who can play in a variety of midfield roles, joins from French club Reims on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
The 22-year-old Djiga arrived from Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade on a five-and-a-half year contract for a fee around £10 million (12 million euros, $12.5 million).
Carlos Alcaraz, a former Southampton midfielder, was brought on loan by Everton from Flamengo.
The Argentine, who is 22 years old, is David Moyes’ first acquisition since taking over as Goodison manager. At the end of the season, Everton has a purchase option.
Evan Ferguson, who was reunited with his former manager Graham Potter, has signed for West Ham on loan.
Stefanos Tzimas, a highly regarded Greek forward, was traded by the Seagulls for Ferguson, who will now play for Bundesliga 2 side FC Nuremberg for the duration of the season.
Up until the end of the season, Chelsea loaned former England left-back Ben Chilwell to Crystal Palace.
