Love Island star Whitney Adebayo revealed she was the target of racial abuse and death threats after she took part in Netflix series, Inside. The seven-day competition, which debuted as a livestream on YouTube last year and moved to Netflix for series two, places a group of social media influencers under one roof, where they vie for a £1 million prize pot.

The housemates must purchase everyday items from an on-site shop that charges exorbitant prices, including basic luxuries like coffee, which can cost hundreds of pounds, to raise the stakes even further. The group must work together to make the most money possible by excluding every dollar spent in the shop from the final prize.

In the first episode, Whitney competed with a tarantula spider to answer questions while it crawled on her head. She forfeited before she could even answer a question, despite initially attempting to brave the challenge. Despite losing the team £10,000, her response was unmistakably relatable.

Mya Mills, Mandi Vakili, George Clarke, Darryl Dwayne Granberry, and Patrice Evra are other of the show’s stars. Despite having a huge following among fans, trolls vilely abused Whitney and threatened her death.

She shared screenshots of the messages she received on her Instagram Stories. Many used racial slurs against her and many wished death upon her. The star also took to her grid to post pictures from the show as she reminded people that “racism is still very much embedded in British culture”.

It’s important to remember that everything you saw was an integral part of the game and made sense of it because I was a “spender” by nature, which added some fun and drama to the show. There have been a number of responses, some positive and some negative.

“Racism is a reality, but what I’ve encountered is more prevalent than anything.” Although I am aware that being in the spotlight can cause criticism, what I’ve gone through recently transcends that criticism.

She continued, “This evil, hatred, and pure racism cannot be tolerated.” The hateful tweets, the death threats, and the unfair treatment I’ve received both serve as reminders that racism is still very much ingrained in British culture. This isn’t just about a TV show; it’s about how society might sometimes respond to women like me, who might not fit a certain stereotype of being cute and mute. Thank you for supporting me.

“Your support and love sustain my soul.” I want to remind those who have tried to demonize me that I don’t have a hatred for myself. It only serves to strengthen my resolve to grow and remain unapologetically myself. Although I had the best time, my journey has come to an end. I’m sure you enjoyed yourself, whether you liked or hated me. You are welcome, ” “
