Louis Theroux makes dramatic career change and joins BBC rival for new projects
Louis Theroux has dramatically changed his career and is leaving the BBC.
The broadcaster is reportedly stepping down from conducting celebrity interviews for the BBC because it is reportedly working on a project for a rival streaming service. Louis, 54, is the director of Louis Theroux Interviews and has appeared on numerous documentaries for the BBC. The show, which launched in 2022 and last aired the following year, saw him speak to various celebrities.
The journalist won’t be able to produce any more BBC Two episodes. For the “foreseeable future,” he won’t be producing any more Louis Theroux Interviews episodes. The outlet adds that his production company, Mindhouse, is not producing any new celebrity series for Netflix. Since founding the production company in 2019, Louis has spearheaded a number of projects it has released.
A source told The Sun: “Louis is very much seen as a BBC star, having launched his career there in 1998 when he was an unknown. And executives were incredibly impressed by his two interview series in 2022 and 2023. The source then concluded: “But now it seems he won’t be going back to the format, potentially for years”.
Through the BBC, Mindhouse has released a number of projects. They include the three-part docuseries Boybands Forever, which launched last year. The series, which featured interviews with Robbie Williams from Take That and Simon Cowell, is credited with Louis serving as an executive producer. However, the production company’s relationship with the BBC appears to be going on. The same broadcaster is reportedly planning to release the Rumoured Follow-Up Docuseries sometime in the coming year.
Mindhouse has collaborated with other broadcasters in the past five years, including releasing a few projects through Sky. Their most recent collaboration, Dart Kings, was released through Sky Documentaries last week. The production company has also worked with Channel 4, Netflix and Prime Video, among other platforms, previously.
The presenter’s production company is also behind the Louis Theroux Podcast, which debuted two years ago. Each episode of the podcast involves an “in-depth” conversation with a high-profile individual. The second and third series, which were released last year, were both released in 2023.
Earlier this week, Louis announced the release date for the podcast’s fourth series. The most recent episodes of the new series will be available starting January 14 in a post from him on X, formerly known as Twitter.
He said in a video message: “Hello, it’s me, Louis Theroux, here to inform you that I’m back with a new series of my podcast. Join me again on Tuesdays as I network with a smorgasbord of remarkable people from all walks of life.
