Lola Young fans just learned that the singer has a well-known family.

The musician recently gained worldwide fame with her song Messy, which received 1.7 million YouTube views under the sound. The 24-year-old from London performed Messy on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show with the assistance of Tyler, the creator of Chromakopia.

The young star attended the BRIT School in Croydon and even took part in Open Mic UK, where she won the contest with Never Enough, which resulted in a consultation package with Future Music and a donation of $5,000 for music development. She made an appearance on CBBC’s Got What It Takes in 2016? and later caught the attention of Amy Winehouse’s manager, Nick Shymansky, while giving performances at local venues and open mic nights.

She signed with Island Records in 2019 and recorded her debut single, “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” for the label. She also won the Rising Star award for her work, Together in Electric Dreams, for the John Lewis Christmas advertisement.

Many people knew about her famous family aunt, Julia Donaldson, who wrote The Gruffalo, but she rose to fame after her. Axel Scheffler is the illustrator of the children’s book. The 76-year-old author also wrote Stick Man and Room on the Broom. Donaldson won over 600,000 copies of J. K. Rowling, the country’s top-selling author, in January 2025.

She was the Children’s Laureate between 2011 and 2013 and received an MBE in 2011. Not only did she surpass Rowling, she also won the Children’s Laureate. Some irritated fans shared their complaints on social media with the claim that Lola’s success was the result of nepotism, with one user saying, “Feel like this woman appeared out of nowhere in the past few months so I had a Google.” Her auntie attended BRIT school and wrote “The Gruffalo.” LOL. The same as it was in the past.

Another person compared how you studied your craft, worked hard, and now get recognized and, thanks to your aunt’s description of “who is this creature with terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws,” you might as well be a “nobody monster.”

Lola previously mentioned her artistic family in the past, but she grew up in a family that nurtured her musical talents. Coming from an artistic family was really beneficial, according to Lola, because they made it clear that I could work in music and earn money doing it. I had no actionable plan B.
