Kate Cassidy, Liam Payne’s girlfriend, has defended her funeral attire after claiming she had no money or fame with the One Direction star.
The 25-year-old recently made her first public appearance since the One Direction singer’s tragic death in October 2024. Aged 31, Liam fell from the balcony of his third floor hotel room in Argentina, where he and Cassidy had been holidaying. He died after enduring numerous traumas that resulted in “internal and external hemorrhage.”
Kate revealed in a new interview that she had been subjected to death threats in response to the negative remarks she had received following his passing. There was a lot of speculation and things being said about me, and I was being called various labels after his death, according to the statement.
She added: “I never (asked him for money). Yes, it’s upsetting, but it’s all about having thick skin, and I’m never going to let anyone know how my relationship with Liam turned out. Only me and Liam are the two people who truly understand how committed a relationship was.
Kate, who described her relationship as “authentic” and “real”, also revealed that she was criticised by some on the day of Liam’s funeral. Some social media users made the claim that she was wearing too much makeup, while others made the claim that she wanted “attention.”
Kate defended her funeral attire and explained the emotional significance of her appearance in a statement to The Sun. She explained that she genuinely wanted to “just look beautiful for my boyfriend one last time so that he would want to see me” and that is how I would want him to remember me.
Since Liam’s death, Kate has returned to her home in America, having vacated the properties she once shared with the musician in London and Florida. She recently revealed why she left Liam in Argentina and moved back to their Florida mansion, and now she has opened up about their romance.
Earlier this week, she said how she had “responsibilities” and had to get home to look after their dog, Nala. However, she says his death was a “tragic accident” and she had no idea that Liam would have died days after she went home. On October 16, Kate was sat at home in their Florida mansion, scrolling on TikTok when the news of Liam’s death emerged.
Instead of seeing it on social media like many of Payne’s friends in the UK had, she feels “blessed” that a friend of his had called her to let her know. Kate grabbed her phone and attempted to call Liam while in shock, initially believing the news was fake.
Liam, who had been open about his struggles in the past, relapsed and turned to drugs and alcohol in the days leading up to his death and after Kate returned home. Kate had been supporting him through his addiction, admitting that she “loved his soul”. But she says he was in a “good headspace” during their time in South America and had even attended a sold-out Niall Horan concert, leaving fans ecstatic as the pair reunited.
Kate, a 10-year-old, fell in love with the Wolverhampton-born megastar, and had One Direction posters plastered all over her childhood bedroom, where she admitted he was her “childhood crush.” She didn’t care about his fame or staggering wealth; she described the late musician as one of the best people she’d ever met. In a South Carolina bar in September 2022, Liam requested her number before asking her out. For Liam, the attraction was immediate, and he asked for her number straight away. However, their relationship almost didn’t take off. Due to having an American number, Kate gave Liam her phone number, but she forgot to add + 1 to her area code.
Following their first date, a bowling match, the two immediately fell head over, and Liam delayed his flight back to London by checking into a hotel for 48 hours. He said, “Would you like to be my girlfriend and would you like to move in with me, and we were watching a movie in bed.” Like, I really love you, ‘” she revealed.
