Today will reveal the fate of the five men charged with Liam Payne’s death.
Rogelio Nores and the two hotel employees charged with manslaughter will fight in court to overturn Judge Laura Bruniard’s indictment, paving the way for a bombshell trial later this year.
The two suspects’ attorneys are scheduled to contest their pre-trial incarceration, which came into effect after their arrests last month, and include selling the singer cocaine before his drink and drug-fuelled October 16th, and facing up to 15 years in prison if found guilty. Following the judicial break in the South American nation in January, the hearing at Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Court in Buenos Aires was scheduled to take place yesterday.
Legal sources said they hoped their decisions would be made before the week’s end, but appeal judges are not expected to make immediate rulings. Mr Nores ‘ hotshot new lawyer is Rafael Cuneo Libarona, the brother of Argentina’s Justice Minister Mariano Cuneo Libarona.
The US-born businessman hired Rogelio last year to support the claim that he was never Liam’s manager or “guarantor” when she made the charge against him.
Mr Cuneo Libarona, who is also playing a key role in a separate DOLLARS 10 million defamation lawsuit his client has lodged in Palm Beach, Florida against Liam’s dad Geoff, told an Argentinian news website last month: “My client is not a manager, he is not a nurse, he is not a psychologist, nor a psychiatrist, nor is he dedicated to the recovery of addicts. He has a straightforward business relationship with a friend in Argentina.
Esteban Grassi, the hotel’s chief receptionist who called 911 moments before Liam died, and Gilda Martin, its head of security, are the other two men who are appealing their manslaughter indictments.
In the most agonizing photo of the former One Direction singer, which shows him being led back to his room from his hotel lobby shortly before his balcony plunge, Grassi was one of the three men pictured alongside Martin. They face prison sentences of up to five years if found guilty of the charges, as did Mr. Nores, despite receiving a notification that their sentences could be commuted with a suspended jail term.
The other two suspects, 24-year-old waiter Braian Nahuel Paiz and 21-year-old suspended hotel worker Ezequiel David Pereyra, are appealing judge Bruniard’s decision to remand them in prison pending her continuing criminal probe. They have both been accused of selling Liam cocaine, and they have been warned that if found guilty, they could receive prison sentences of up to 15 years.
Mr Nores ‘ alleged managerial role towards Liam, a position he has denied holding, has been key to the decision to prosecute the businessman. In a preliminary indictment issued at the end of December, Judge Bruniard accused Mr. Nores of “failing in his duty of care, assistance, and help” towards the singer. He was currently barred from leaving Argentina as a result of the charges against him.
She claimed that he “abandoned him to his fate, knowing he couldn’t fend for himself, aware of his continued addiction to cocaine and alcohol, and fully aware of the state of intoxication he was in. After visiting CasaSur Palermo Hotel, the businessman later discovered that he had been hired as Liam’s manager in an internal hotel email, where he had been shown a “like a lot” of rooms before the singer ended up checking into the third-floor suite he had fallen from after binge drinking and using drugs.
At the end of an October 11 email, the word “Manager” was used to refer to Roger Nores as a pop star and friend, and there are the words “assistant manager” next to Roger’s.
She was raised in Buenos Aires by an Argentinian diplomat father and a Brazilian mother, who have since moved there as a teenager. She is not one of the five people facing charges, and there is no indication at this point that she was acting in any formal or informal capacity as Liam’s assistant manager.
In a lengthy statement released on December 30 by Argentinian authorities, Roger Nores was the “victim’s representative,” despite the fact that they only knew him from his initials R. L. N. Additionally, Mr. Nores has asserted in a written statement to the court that their friendship was solely based on friendship and that he wasn’t Liam’s doctor, lawyer, representative, or therapeutic companion. Laura Bruniard pointed the finger at hotel owners Mr. Grassi and Mr. Martin for their decision to move Liam from the lobby to his third-floor room because of his previous binge and drink. She said it” created a legally unacceptable risk to his life “which had” foreseeable “consequences.
Ezequiel Pereyra turned himself in on January 6 after making himself a fugitive the previous week after unsuccessful police attempts to track him down and detain him so he could be put in pre-trial custody at the prosecutor’s discretion. The other three suspects were given permission to remain free men, but they were also instructed to turn over their assets in order to avoid prison. Rogelio Nores has accused the singer’s father of making “misleading false and defamatory claims” in sworn statements to Buenos Aires prosecutor’s offices, including the claim that he was Liam’s nurse and that he was in charge of his care in a separate US defamation lawsuit against Geoff Payne.
