Lawmakers Urge FG To Prioritise Water Transportation

On Wednesday, federal lawmakers asked the government to prioritize water transportation in the nation.

The lawmakers urged the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to reconsider its budget defense session, underscoring how neglected it has been in relation to road and air travel.

Hon. Ojema Ojotu, who was re-echoing other senators’ positions, stated that the government gives road and air transport a lot of attention at the National Assembly joint committee on marine transportation.

” As lawmakers, we are saying that the same level of priority should be given to water transportation. Water transportation must also receive special attention, according to those of us who have access to the President.

Ojotu emphasized the value of investing in inland waterways, noting that improving water transportation infrastructure would ease the country’s overburdened road network and give commuters and other transportation options a safer, more affordable option.

A well-developed water transportation system will decongest our roads in less than a year. It is also a safer and cheaper means of transportation, “he said.

Beyond transportation, lawmakers at the session also advocated for increased funding to address flooding, insecurity and improve inland waterways across the country.
