It’s no wonder that Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s latest collaboration with wallpaper brand Galerie is as bold and vibrant as the artist himself because the flamboyant interior designer has a fun and eclectic taste in home design. He discusses his rather surprising home must-have as the darker nights draw in and how to create a living space that is as individual as you are in an exclusive chat to mark the launch.

Personal touch

He claims that “encircling yourself with personal items increases the senses and creates a visual journal that communicates the soul to a room.” Their worth, from family heirlooms to newly acquired pieces, is more sentimental than financial. These choices frequently bring up milestones and memories in our lives.

Follow the patterns

A man’s “pattern is the little corner of interior design that sets him apart from the animals,” says Laurence. “A room without pattern is a room without romance, without storytelling. Charles Eastlake, the Victorian tastemaker, said that if humans occupy rooms without ornamentation, they develop intense neuralgia. So, that’s why minimalism gave everyone a headache”.

Works of art

The interior designer describes the winter as “a chromatic feast, with the kind of color-combining earthlings haven’t seen since the Joan Collins heyday of the 1980s.” “It won’t be long until we also bring back wallpaper borders.” When you use one of my papers, you’re using art in your room, which is how I like to make patterns. The walls become main characters in a storybook”.

Cocktail hour

Laurence’s top three tips for your winter home are: “Clean your windows – this time of year the sun is low, so you need to maximise light. You’d be amazed by the difference”. Heavy curtains and a good lining not only improve the way your home feels, but they also significantly lower your heating bills. And ensure you have a full beverage tray!

Festive flair

What does Laurence enjoy about the holiday season? I have an issue with Christmas, “he admits”. It can be terribly claustrophobic. I use spring bulbs to light up the house. I can use bun moss to make small gardens out of anything I can. If you plant them all a few days before Christmas Eve, they will actually help you enter the new year feeling upbeat and upbeat, which is typically the case with all those carbohydrates.

Bright ideas

It’s difficult not to be obsessed with the scintillatingly seductive combination of peacock and blood orange, Laurence says. You should never have room for anything that is grey on grey, it goes without saying. “And when asked what is the one home decor product he simply couldn’t live without, Laurence unexpectedly declares”, Gin! “
