The Kano State Government has commissioned a stormwater drainage project in Ladanai Quarters of Nasarawa Local Government Area, in a move aimed at addressing persistent flooding and improving residents’ living conditions.
The project was inaugurated on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad, who described the initiative as part of the administration’s broader commitment to delivering people-oriented projects across the state.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Muhammad said the project was executed in response to requests from the community, reflecting the government’s inclusive approach to development.
“As you can see, we are here today to commission the drainage works carried out in the Ladanai community. This is in line with His Excellency’s commitment to ensuring that projects that improve the lives and livelihoods of the good people of Kano are implemented across the state,” he said.

The commissioner noted that residents of the area had long faced severe flooding during the rainy season, which adversely affected their social and economic activities.
He added that the state government is integrating drainage systems into construction, renewal, and rehabilitation projects as part of a comprehensive plan to establish an effective drainage network across Kano.
“In every construction, renewal, or rehabilitation work undertaken by the state government, we are integrating effective drainage systems. This will ultimately ensure a functional drainage master plan for the state,” he stated.
Muhammad expressed optimism that the intervention would significantly reduce flooding and provide residents with a safer environment during the rainy season. He also urged community members to take responsibility for maintaining the infrastructure.
“We have delivered the infrastructure, but sustainability requires collective effort. The community must ensure proper usage and maintenance to preserve these facilities,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area, Yusuf Imam, represented by the Councillor of Hotoro North, Ibrahim Musa, commended the state government for the project and praised the commissioner’s dedication.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Ladanai Community Association, Jamilu Kabir, expressed relief, noting that the project would address longstanding flooding challenges in the area.
