Just in: US govt. repatriates $52.88m linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke
The government of the United States of America (USA) has repatriated $ 52.88 million, which the government claimed was the work of former Nigerian minister of petroleum resources Diezani Alison-Madueke.
A delegation headed by US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard M. Mills, Jr., on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters in Abuja, finalized the Assets Return Agreement.
While signing the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the attorney general of the Federation and minister of justice, made it clear that the $ 52.88 million was seized from the forfeiture of Galactica assets relating to a former minister and her associates.
Fagbemi said the development demonstrated the US’s unwavering support for integrity and accountability in governance, as well as the country’s unwavering commitment to combating corruption.
The World Bank and IIJ have also put measures in place to ensure that the repatriated funds are used transparent and accountable, with periodic reports being sent to Nigeria and the US regarding the implementation of the projects.
According to UNCAC and the Global Forum on Asset Recovery (GFAR), this robust framework will ensure that the funds are effectively used for the full benefit of the people of Nigeria.
Persecondnews recalls that Alison-Madueke made history in Nigeria’s political landscape with her numerous” firsts”.
On July 26, 2007, she was appointed Nigeria’s transportation minister, and she later transitioned to the Mines and Steel Development Ministry.
Under former President Goodluck Jonathan’s leadership, she was appointed in April 2010 as the first female minister of petroleum resources.
In response to the government’s and the wealthy’ financial burden, she supported the repeal of state subsidies for fuel prices.
At the 166th OPEC Ordinary Meeting in Vienna on November 27, 2014, Alison-Madueke was elected as the first female leader of the organization.
Persecondnews recalls that serious allegations of corruption and improper handling of funds contributed to her lengthy tenure in office.
While she was in charge of acting as minister, these accusations cast a shadow over her accomplishments, raising questions about accountability and transparency.
She is currently a fugitive in the UK and is facing charges of money laundering and corruption in several Nigerian courts. Her government has already seized her assets and properties worth billions of naira.
