JUST IN: Police Withdraw Defamation Charge Against Farotimi

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, is suing Lagos-based lawyer and author Dele Farotimi in an alleged defamation lawsuit, and the Nigeria Police Force has filed a notice of discontinuance with the Nigeria Police Force.

The notice of discontinuance filed on January 29th, 2015, pursuant to Section 108(1)(2)(a) of the 2015 Administration of Criminal Justice Act, asks to withdraw Mr. Farotimi’s charge from the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti.

The notice, which was signed by the police prosecutor, Samson Osubu, also disclosed that the police would be asking the court to strike out the charge following the desire of the nominal complainant, Are Afe Babalola, to discontinue the case after the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians.

At the time of writing this report, the defendant’s attorney had been served a notice in court by the prosecution at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti, and the defendants’ attorneys had gathered there.
