Jos Buttler resigns as England captain after Champions Trophy exit

After a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign ended with them not making it to the semifinals, Jos Buttler has made the decision to step down as England’s limited-overs captain.
At a news conference on Friday, the 34-year-old said, “I’m going to step down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me and the team.”
“It’s the right choice for the team,” said Brendon McCullum, who should hopefully have someone else join the team to assist in getting the team back where it needs to be.
I just probably reached the end of the road for myself and my captaincy because it was going to be important for my captaincy, which is unfortunate because of my two losses and being out of the tournament. That’s disappointing to me.
England were knocked out of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday after falling to archrivals Australia by five wickets in their opening match against tournament debutants Afghanistan in Lahore, Pakistan.
Since taking over as England’s skipper in June 2022, Buttler has already recorded 22 losses in 34 One-Day Internationals. He had previously stated he would consider his future as the country’s skipper but would not make any emotional decisions.
England won their second Twenty20 World Cup title in 2022 under the direction of the 34-year-old, but their performances have since decreased and neither team has remained undefeated.
