Doug Pederson, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach, has been fired after three seasons.
After winning just four games in two years before Pederson’s appointment in 2022, the Jaguars had a 9-8 record in his first two seasons.
The Jaguars also earned a play-off win in his first season but Pederson, 56, has now made way after stumbling to a 4-13 record this term.
Owner of the team, Shahid Khan, described Dog as a “prodigious football player who will undoubtedly enjoy yet another chapter in his impressive NFL career.
“I have an obligation first and foremost to serve the best interests of our team, and especially our fans, who faithfully support our team and are overdue to be rewarded,” Doug and I both wish his experience here in Jacksonville would have ended better. In that spirit, the time to summon new leadership is now”.
Jerod Mayo and the New England Patriots both left the NFL after the final regular-season games on Sunday, making Pederson the second head coach to be fired.
Since Khan took over the Jaguars in 2012, Pederson was the Jaguars’ fifth permanent head coach. He won the Eagles’ only Super Bowl victory in 2018.
Trevor Lawrence, the quarterback’s former number one draft pick, suffered a number of injuries this year, despite receiving a reported $ 275 million (£216 million) in a five-year contract extension last summer.
The Jaguars have also agreed a deal worth $1.4bn (£1.15bn) to renovate their stadium.
Since 2013, they have played annual games in London and are considering adding additional home games while their ground is being upgraded.
