‘I’ve Never Been Removed,’ Obasa Insists He Remains Lagos Assembly Speaker

The disputed Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has vowed to keep his position.

Obasa stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

According to Obasa, he has never been impeached as the Speaker.

“I’ve consistently said that my office has never been removed.” I am not against any removal”, he said.

“You must adhere to the rules of the House if you want to do that.” Impeachment and removal are both legal. You have to follow the dictates of the Constitution”.

Before entering the Assembly Complex, Obasa showed up as escorted by stern-looking uniformed security personnel. Thursday’s appearance was Obasa’s first in the Assembly since his removal as Lagos speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025.

His supporters gathered at the Assembly Complex entrance to chant and cheer on the lawmaker who represents Agege Constituency I in the 40-member House in a show of solidarity.

Briefing reporters, the 52-year-old politician told journalists on the premises of the House that “Obasa is the speaker”,

Asked whether he has been reinstated as speaker, Obasa said, “I’ve never been removed. Democratic and constitutional laws require removal or impeachment, but it is necessary to do so in accordance with the law. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic”.
