‘It was the right time’ – Doak on Ireland debut

Ireland debutant Nathan Doak says his first cap came “at the right time” after he was introduced off the bench in Friday’s hard-fought 27-17 win over Wales at the Aviva Stadium.

The Ulster scrum-half came on as a temporary replacement for Jamison Gibson-Park in the first half while the Leinster player received treatment for a knee injury and was a substitute for the same player in the second half.

Doak’s form with Ulster saw him called into Ireland head coach Andy Farrell’s squad for the Six Nations but he has had to be patient to see his first action on the pitch.

“Every player wants to play for Ireland. I have 100 caps in the URC [United Rugby Championship], I have that experience and I’ve had to wait my time and get better at my game to deserve my shot,” said Doak.

“It was the right time for me. I feel I’m playing my best rugby at the moment so it was quite fitting.

‘Reaping the benefits’ of Ulster’s form

The 24-year-old was one of seven Ulster players in the Ireland matchday squad for the game in Dublin, five in the starting team and two among the replacements.

“I think there was a stat during the week that there were no Ulster players in the last Ireland team that played Wales so to have seven tonight shows the work we are putting in and that we’re desperate to come and play in the green jersey. That’s where all our aspirations are,” Doak continued.

“Ulster are doing well and we’re reaping the benefits.

“Because it was so quick [coming on for Gibson-Park in the first half] you didn’t have time to think so it was quite a nice thing as well. Then it makes it easier coming on the second time so it helps settle the nerves.”

Doak added that the week leading up to his first appearance is one he will cherish.

“It’s been class, it’s been a class week, my family were down at my jersey presentation during the week, and to have them here with me tonight, it’s been a great week,” reflected Doak as he spoke to reporters post-match.
