Inside Wynne Evans’ biggest controversies as he’s sacked from Strictly
Unexpectedly, Wynne Evans, who is well-known for his roles in the GoCompare ads and appearance on Strictly Come Dancing last year, has unveiled his exit from the live broadcast series. Following a controversy where he made a sexually inappropriate remark during a photo call, the 53-year-old decided to step down after a controversy. He had been on previous contestants’ tours.
The opera singer has just come under fire for his latest controversy. We have taken a look back at his troubled moments from the past year as he was “axed” from the Strictly Tour lineup following the news of his being…
Taking to Instagram this afternoon, he said: “I’ve agreed with the BBC that l’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing”.
He further expressed regret, mentioning: “I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection”.
Wynne added, “I’m sorry to those I won’t see at the remaining performances, and I’m grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.”
Spit roasting comment
After it was reported that he had used the term “spit roast” to refer to host Janette Manrara in a private jest with former Strictly co-star Jamie Borthwick, an actor from EastEnders, the controversy was made public.
In response to the backlash, Wynne stated: “My language was inappropriate and unacceptable, for which I sincerely apologise”.
Before this incident, he had already missed a performance due to an ankle injury, although at that time, BBC officials were not aware of his comment.
We didn’t receive any complaints before the remark, according to a BBC Studios representative. They continued, “We have made it very clear to Wynne that we do not tolerate such behavior on the tour.”
‘ That ‘ Katya Jones moment
During the Strictly series last year, Wynne was accused of ‘ groping ‘ his partner Katya Jones, 35.
Following their routine on a live show, viewers slammed him after he was spotted by a grimacing Katya removing his hand.
Later, Wynne attempted to give Katya a high five, but the cameras caught her rolling her eyes and stumbling.
Trying to defuse the situation, which blew up on social media, the pair claimed they were “just messing around” and that it was a “silly inside joke”.
On the Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two, Katya later remarked, “You guys have got it wrong. The idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is total nonsense.” So hopefully, and you keep making me smile, that this is the end of it.
Crude joke
When Wynne suggested to a make-up artist that the folds on his double chin resembled a vagina, they further sparked a furore two weeks later. He claimed that he had a private conversation with at least one other person in the room and that his quip was self-deprecating.
It’s not known whether the incident was investigated or a complaint was filed, according to The Mirror. It was a bit of a vulgar dad joke, a source told us at the time.
They added: “Wynne clearly didn’t mean any offence, but you have to be a little bit careful these days”.
The Mirror contacted his representatives for comment at the time.
