He joined Piccadilly Radio in Manchester a year later, where his deep knowledge of soul music helped him become a significant figure in the field.

Peebles made the transition to BBC Radio 1, where he would continue until 1992, when he left in 1978. He gained notoriety for his “Soul Train” show, which demonstrated his deep appreciation for the genre while he was there.

His shows have introduced the best of soul, funk, and R&amp, B. His enthusiasm and knowledge have made him a well-known figure in the field.

In December 1980, Peebles conducted what would turn out to be John Lennon’s final interview, which was one of his most significant moments in his career.

Peebles made history history his own with a candid and personal conversation with Lennon and Yoko Ono on December 6 just two days before the former Beatle was murdered in New York.

One of the most significant and well-known interviews in rock history is still being conducted, cementing Peebles’ reputation as a top interviewer.

The news of Peebles’ passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the broadcasting world. Fellow DJ Mike Read expressed his devastation, calling Peebles “an amazing broadcaster with encyclopedic knowledge of music.”

Others praised his warmth, professionalism, and impact on the industry while referring to him as a “lovely man and a great talent” as a fellow Radio 1 contemporary.

Peebles’ close friend Geoff Baker revealed that the broadcaster’s death came as a shock, as he had seemed in good health just a day prior. Baker described him as not only an expert in music but also a keen cricket enthusiast with an unmatched ability to recall facts and stories from both worlds.

Peebles was well-known for his love of cricket and frequently contributed to BBC cricket coverage away from the microphone. His broadcasting skills made him a well-rounded and respected figure in fields other than music.

Peebles lived a relatively private life, focusing on his career, despite his public image. His dedication to high-quality broadcasting, his love of soul music, and his ability to connect with both artists and audiences kept him a cherished figure throughout his career.

His legacy would have been even greater with the Lennon interview alone, but his wider contributions to radio and music journalism would have been even greater.
