Former Barcelona and former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert has been appointed as Indonesia’s head coach.

Shin Tae-yong, a South Korean coach, will take over as coach for the 48-team World Cup in 2026, and the 48-year-old will aim to get his team ready for the expanded competition.

Kluivert, who won the Champions League with Ajax and played in the Premier League for Newcastle, has signed a two-year contract with the option for an extension.

The southeast Asian nation has only previously qualified for the tournament, when they were Dutch East Indies at the time of the 1938 edition.

The Dutchman’s first assignment will be a third qualifying round tie with Australia in March, with two of their six nations automatically qualifying for the World Cup, and two more advance to the next round.

Indonesia, who are 127th in the Fifa rankings, sit third in their group after six of 10 games.

Kluivert took over the Turkish side Adana Demirspor for a five-month spell before taking over as the team’s manager in 2023.
