India eyes hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games as it bids for 2036 Olympics

The 2030 Commonwealth Games, which India has proposed as a “expression of interest,” could serve as a model for the nation’s bigger ambition of hosting the Olympic Games six years later.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games were held in New Delhi by India, which has never hosted an Olympics. Although the event itself was regarded as a success, corruption and mismanagement contributed to the build-up, which was later exposed.

The 12 days of $ 6 billion games featured the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium’s centerpiece of sporting action.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P. T. Usha stated to the Reuters news agency on Friday that “we have sent an expression of interest” and that the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will take our proposal into consideration.

Given that the Games has struggled to find sponsors in recent years, India is optimistic about winning the centenary edition of the multi-sports gathering, which is primarily based in former British colonies.

After the original host, the Australian state of Victoria, pulled out due to rising costs, Glasgow, Scotland’s will host a smaller version of the Games in 2017.

Following Durban’s financial difficulties, the city of South Africa also withdrew from the 2022 Games.

Expressions of interest for hosting the 2030 edition are due by March 31.

The CGF stated in an email to Reuters that the investigation was ongoing and that details would be provided “in due course.”
