Incredible moment Ed Sheeran stuns schoolchildren with surprise visit
Ed Sheeran, the legendary musician, showed up at their school this week, shocking a group of students.
The 33-year-old singer chatted with young people and even performed in front of a sizable 100-strong choir that included delighted children from all over Edinburgh.
The Tinderbox Collective, a city initiative to promote and develop young musical talent, was awestruck children who visited the city’s Muirhouse neighborhood. One boy called Maxwell said: “We were absolutely shocked. I have always admired Ed Sheeran’s singing and musical style. I’m still inspired to do music, and I’m doing it now.
Another member of the Tinderbox Collective said: “Unbelievable. Ed and I both enjoy his music. Just to see him right now is amazing. Crazy. Inspiring”.
Sheeran, who has had 11 UK number ones, said: “Music education has shaped who I am. I’ve always enjoyed playing music, and it’s led to some of the best moments of my life”. The Ed Sheeran Foundation, which aims to offer an inclusive music education to all students in the UK, is represented by the center in the Scottish capital.
The singer, who has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, added he feels music education is important both in and out of school settings and feels it should be more comprehensive. The father of two praised Scotland’s move to offer free music lessons and urged further efforts to make it accessible and inspiring for all.
However, The Shape of You hitmaker, who spent a lot of his 2024 touring as a result of his The Mathematics Tour, believes that more places like Tinderbox Collective can provide opportunities for young people.
Ed’s visit was very inspiring for all the young musicians at Tinderbox, according to Jack Nissan, director of Tinderbox Collective. He now works tirelessly to promote music education and foster connections with the wider music industry.
He further emphasised the need for collaboration, stating: “We need to work together across schools, the community and the industry to fill music education with as much energy, diversity and creativity as possible, and to make sure that it is accessible, relevant and inspiring for everyone”.
