IGP Warns Officers Against Illegal Detention, Says There Will Be Consequences

Officers should beware of unlawful detention, according to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, who has warned against doing so. &nbsp,

The IGP cited sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which “provide the right to dignity and personal liberty,” in a statement from Muyiwa Adejobi, a spokesman for the Force.

The IGP cautions against any practices that could lead to unlawful or drawn-out detentions, which could undermine public confidence in law enforcement, and reiterates that any officer found to be abusing these guidelines will face severe consequences, according to the statement from Sunday.

The IGP encourages officers to uphold the highest standards of conduct in their interactions with the public by calling for a culture of accountability within the Force.

AGF also recommends protecting security personnel from arrests of suspects after their arrest is permitted by law.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) wants to strengthen its ties to the communities it serves and ensure that all policing is conducted with integrity, according to the police chief.

The statement continued, “The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated with respect and in accordance with the law.”

The current police leadership’s commitment to protecting human rights is reflected in a larger vision of a police force that is both committed to upholding law and order and upholding everyone’s rights and dignity.
