Following a High Court ruling, they were previously arraigned on a holden charge, a temporary legal instrument not recognized by Nigerian law. They were later released on bail after being detained and placed in custody.
The case, which was scheduled for mention on Monday, was adjourned until March 24, 2025, by the Chief Magistrate.
According to defense attorney Dapo Akinosi, who is representing Oriyomi Hamzat, “The matter today was actually scheduled for mention because when they were arraigned initially, it was on a holden charge, which is not recognized by our law,” in a statement released following the court session. Because of that charge, they were kept in jail.
” We subsequently applied to the High Court, where bail was granted to the defendants. Legal counsel has now been provided, and the appropriate information has been obtained about them. However, they are yet to be served with the information.
“Today, we came to court so that the charge here could be withdrawn. We requested a longer adjournment so that proper proceedings, including plea-taking at the High Court, can be conducted before the case can be concluded at the Magistrate Court because their plea has not yet been accepted.
