For the rape and sexual abuse of seven girls, a former ice hockey player and TV extra has been sentenced to 28 years.
As Philip Hamer was serving a 41-year sexual offence sentence, the defendant clapped at the judge and cried in the public.
Hamer, 34, who had been a professional hockey player and a bit-part actor on TV soaps, had a “wholly distorted view of children as sexual objects”, the court heard.
He targeted and manipulated his victims through social media, including Snapchat and Instagram, before sexually abusing them. He was attracted to girls in their early to mid-teen years.
He was 20 when he groomed his first victim, aged 14, through Facebook in 2010 and went on to groom an 11-year-old, when he was aged 27, through Snapchat.
Hamer, of Birchfield Drive, Worsley, Greater Manchester, had admitted 20 offences but denied others, claiming one victim was “wanton” and “sexually experienced”.
After the trial ended in November, a jury found him guilty of 21 more crimes.
Judge Sarah Johnston told the defendant, “These were no relationships, you manipulated and groomed these young girls, inexperienced and impressionable as they were, in a way that was controlling and coercive,” while jutting him out for 28 years and an eight-year extension of his license.
” Your offending is both opportunistic and actively seeking out, manipulating, grooming, exploiting and the abuse of female children, mostly teens but including a child as young as 11. “
Victim impact statements detailed the trauma of the “lost innocence” of the children he abused, some of whom are still receiving therapy or having issues with self-harm.
Due to my trauma, one woman said, “I have never had a successful relationship.” It’s completely messed up my whole life, “while another said:” I pray you find God. “
His trial was told that Hamer would send unsolicited photos and videos to his victims, who frequently sent him school uniforms.
He frequently took his victims away from the abuse’s sites by driving them there.
One victim feared that Hamer might come home and show the pictures to others.
Later, police discovered voyeuristic photos and images of women who had not been aware they were being filmed.
He was “spoken to,” according to the court, despite the allegations that were made in 2011, but no police investigation was launched until a victim came forward in 2023.
As detectives looked up more victims, his phone was discovered with “trophy images” of sexual abuse, revealing that he frequently committed crimes.
Between 2010 and 2023, Hamer was found guilty of 41 counts of sexual activity, including nine counts of sexual contact with a child, two counts of sexual communication with a child, two counts of meeting a child while in the presence of a child, eight counts of rape, six counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, four counts of assault by penetration, and two counts of sexual assault.
