German golfer Freddy Schott got the better of Scotland’s Calum Hill and former Masters champion Patrick Reed in a play-off to win his first DP World Tour title at the Bahrain Championship.

Hill started the day two shots clear but saw his rivals close the gap with Reed shooting a 67 to make up a four-stroke deficit while the Scot bogeyed the final hole to finish with a 71 while Schott carded a 69 to leave the trio on 17 under after 72 holes.

Reed, who won last week’s Dubai Desert Classic and is planning to return to the PGA Tour later in the year after leaving LIV Golf, bogeyed the first play-off hole to drop out of contention.

It all went wrong for Hill at the next hole with his tee shot going out of bounds and he then found the water at the fourth.

The 31-year-old conceded as Schott chipped onto the green at the Royal Golf Club.

“I have no idea. It’s just amazing,” said the 24-year-old victor. “I’m just extremely happy, surprised. I don’t know what’s happening right now. I’m just so happy.
