Australian Open 2025
Date: 12-26 January Venue: Melbourne Park
Alfie Hewett, the reigning champion of the wheelchair singles, defeated Tokito Oda, the defending champion, in the Australian Open final.
Hewett defeated the Japanese player in their previous three major finals, including the one where they had previously won Paralympic gold over the Japanese player last summer.
But second seed Hewett got the better of the 18-year-old with a 6-4 6-4 victory to claim his second singles title in Melbourne.
Hewett, who won a sixth consecutive doubles title alongside Gordon Reid on Friday, comes to a successful tournament.
“Tokito, we’ve had so many battles and finals over the last couple of years, so thank you for letting me have this one”, Hewett said.
I’m very happy and overjoyed to have my hands on this trophy because it seems impossible to beat this guy in a final.
Hewett completed a career Grand Slam with his first Wimbledon singles victory last year.
“Big congrats to Alfie and your team”, Oda said.
