Heavens Won’t Fall, LPDC, NBA Must Treat Petitions Against Senior Lawyers — Retired Judge

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, a retired justice of the Federal High Court, has accused the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) of not handling petitions against senior and powerful lawyers.

He was a guest on Channels Television’s Law Weekly programme anchored by Shola Soyele.

The retired judge added that the judges’ inconsequential judgments result from a lack of coordination and communication.

He said, “I think there should be a situation where judgments are distributed throughout.”

When it comes to things like that, the LPDC, that committee is not functioning as it should.

The matter won’t go through the courts because we have seen cases where very senior lawyers are involved and petitions are filed. No matter who, the NBA must step up and ensure that lawyers’ hearts won’t fall. Let’s let A or B see what they are doing by opening the backs of the turkey or ostrich. If it’s a disservice to the legal profession, the NBA must say something about it,” he said.

“Don’t let’s deceive ourselves, the NBA is not doing enough, especially when it comes to very senior lawyers, they won’t do anything. It’s a matter of rub my back, I rub your back. You must remember that not to offend so and so. Why can’t you offend so and so? You must be able to tell the person what you are doing is wrong if they are going to denigrate your profession. ”
