Governors Forum Declines Comment On “Contentious” Political Issues

Commenting on contentious political issues that are currently being resolved in the country would be a “poor sense of political history,” according to the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

Its director general, Abdulateef Shittu, stated in a statement that it would not make comments on unrest.

Their position comes as Rivers State is currently experiencing political unrest.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has received inquiries from the media asking for its opinion on some recent political developments.

The Forum wants to clarify that it is an umbrella body for subnational governments to support unified policy positions and work with relevant stakeholders in the interests of long-term socioeconomic growth and people’s well-being.

The body chooses to steer clear of taking positions that may alienate members with varying political interests because it serves as a technical and policy hub with governors elected on various platforms.

Taking positions on contentious partisan issues would convey a bad sense of history, as it was only a few years after the Forum overcame a fundamental division as a result of political differences among its members.

The Forum is renowned for its bold positions on governance and general policy issues with profound effects, including those relating to wages, taxes, education, and universal healthcare, according to the NGF.
