Gov Abiodun Warns Against Establishment Of Sharia Court In Ogun

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has warned against any attempt to establish a Sharia Court in the state.

Abiodun made the observation in a statement he signed on Tuesday that no person or organization can legally form Sharia Courts without the support of a court.

A Sharia Court does not constitute a component of the state’s legal framework, according to him, adding that the state government only recognizes courts established under the terms of the Nigerian Constitution.

A digital notice announcing the establishment of a Shari’ah Court in Ogun State has been received, according to Abiodun.

Ogun State’s existence is not governed by Sharia Law. The courts that are legally empowered to adjudicate disputes arising within Ogun State are those established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or by State Laws, which are: Magistrates’ Courts, High Court, Customary Courts, Customary Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.

Sharia law is not a component of the legal framework under which the Ogun State government operates and governs society, and no law in Ogun State has established a Sharia Court.

The Ogun State Government upholds and safeguards the right of people to practice their religion, whether they choose to practice it or not, and acknowledges the right to exercise their faith in both personal and professional matters.

“However, this freedom does not extend to the formation of unauthorized assemblies or institutions. Without the consent of the court, no person or organization is legally able to form a court or to appear in court.

No legal authority exists for those who issued the notice. They are unable to establish a court or issue public notice.

The Ogun State Government hereby orders that all those responsible for the establishment or operation of this unauthorized court must immediately stop all related activities and disband the illegal entity and its apparatus.

The Ogun State Government also advises people to disregard any summonses, documents, or individuals connected to the unlawful Sharia Court. Such events should be promptly reported to the state.
