Gene passed away on February 27, 2025 at the age of 95. At their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, Gene and his wife Betsy, 63, were discovered dead along with their dog.

Although the exact cause is unknown, Elizabeth told TMZ that toxic fumes may have played a role. Although Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, authorities have not found any other evidence of foul play. At 1:45 p.m., police were called to a Hyde Park address on Old Sunset Trail. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Wednesday. According to People, the sheriff’s office also revealed to US news agency KOB 4 that the forces responded to a call from a neighbor urging them to carry out a welfare check on the actor and his wife.

When deputies conducted a welfare check on the couple’s bodies, gas and fire department personnel were dispatched to check for the presence of no hazardous fumes that might harm the officers during the search, according to Sheriff Mendoza.

The report further stated that Gene and Betsy’s bodies weren’t discovered until 12:30 a.m. on Thursday morning despite police arriving at the property early on Wednesday afternoon.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office said in a statement that “on February 26, 2025, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a location on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, and a dog were discovered dead.”

The exact cause of death has not been determined at this time, but foul play is not suspected to be a factor in those deaths. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an ongoing and active investigation.

Gene later admitted to having a strained relationship with his children, which he later admitted with a heartbreaking confession. Despite his fame, Gene’s personal life was marked by this.
