Gene Hackman investigators share update on star’s beloved surviving dogs found at scene

Following the tragic discovery of Gene Hackman’s 95-year-old Oscar winner and his wife, 65, in their Santa Fe home, two of his dogs, have been found.
The couple’s dog, who had passed away earlier this week, was found alongside them, but the other two pets are now in good hands. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office shared the following on Facebook: “The Santa Fe County Animal Control Division worked with family to ensure the two dogs’ safety.
Meanwhile, Gene’s three children are being interrogated by the police regarding his final movements before the death of his and wife Betsy. The star’s three children, Leslie, 58, and Christopher, 65, Elizabeth, 63, and Leslie, 58, are still with his ex-wife, Faye Maltese.
In the days leading up to the triple tragedy, when the pair were discovered dead in separate rooms of their Santa Fe home, police are looking into Gene and Betsy’s final movements. In the same room as Betsy, one of the couple’s dogs was also discovered dead.
After a maintenance worker became concerned, details about how the grim discovery was revealed. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were called to an address on Old Sunset Trail on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at approximately 1:45 p.m., where Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, and a dog were discovered dead. A homeowner called neighborhood security to perform a welfare check after arriving to do maintenance on the home, but the homeowner expressed concern after receiving no response. Security then called 911 after seeing Hackman and Arakawa unresponsive while looking through a window at the home.
Deputies arrived and gained access to the residence where they found Mrs. Arakawa dead. They continued to look around the house and discovered Mr. Hackman in a different neighborhood, which is also deceased. On the property, two other dogs who appeared healthy were discovered, as well as a dog that had passed away. The criminal investigations division was then informed and the scene secured.
The sheriff explained that the investigation is still pending and that the bodies underwent autopsies. Hackman and Arakawa were taken to the Office of the Medical Investigator on February 27, 2025, according to the statement. A body examination was performed. No external trauma to either of the initial findings was noted. Both individuals requested toxicology and carbon monoxide tests. Death occurred in a manner and a cause unknown. The toxicology and autopsy reports are still awaiting official results. This investigation is still ongoing.
