Gene Hackman dead: Police statement as actor, wife Betsy and their dog found at home

Following Gene Hackman’s passing, the police issued a statement.

Hackman died at the age of 95, along with his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63. The Hollywood star died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lived with his wife, Betsy. Just after midnight, local police obtained more information about the couple’s death. At 1:45 p.m., the police were called to a Hyde Park address on Old Sunset Trail. m on Wednesday, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

Adan Mendoza, the sheriff of Santa Fe County, reported the passing of both Hackman and Arakawa, as well as their dog. Mendoza added that there wasn’t any foul play, but he provided no further information about the death’s cause or time. A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office read: “On February 26, 2025 at approximately 1: 45 p. m., Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95 and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64 and a dog were found deceased.

The exact cause of death has not been determined at this time, but foul play is not suspected to be a factor in those deaths. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an ongoing and active investigation.

The cause of death is still being investigated, according to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, who added, “All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant.”

According to GB News, Mendoza added, “I want to assure the community and neighborhood that nobody is in immediate danger.”

Hackman was last seen with his wife in March 2024 after being spotted looking frail during recent outings. The actor and his wife Arakawa were seen leaving the Santa Fe restaurant Pappadeaux’s after taking a bite out of it. Hackman looked more casual in cargo trousers, a plaid shirt, and a gilet, while Arakawa was much more formalized for the meal out. The star also leaped onto his wife’s arm as they made their way down a short set of stairs while the couple exchanged a quick cane.

The last time Hackman was seen in front of the camera acting in a role was in the 2004 comedy Welcome To Mooseport, aside from his sporadic trips out in Santa Fe. He claimed at the time that he had no plans to line any projects and had no plans to direct any other movies with Ray Romano and Christine Baranski for the movie.

His retirement was announced in 2008 as part of the release of his third novel, Escape From Andersonville. His career, which began in 1956 when he met Dustin Hoffman, came to an end with him joining the Pasadena Playhouse. He started acting in small roles on television in 1963 before making a name for himself after receiving an Oscar nomination for his role in I Never Sang For My Father.

Gene is a legend in the film industry with over 100 credits to his name, including huge hits such as Enemy of the State, Crimson Tide, No Way Out and The French Connection. Over his long career he received won two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
