The 911 call to the police that was made to report Gene Hackman’s and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s discovery has been made in its entirety.

Betsy was just 63 when Gene passed away at the age of 95 at his Santa Fe, New Mexico, mansion. The alarm was set off by a property caretaker who had been glancing through a window into the property when he noticed a woman lying on the floor.

“Santa Fe 911. What does “the emergency” mean? The caretaker responded, “Hello, my name is]redacted], I’m the caretaker for Santa Fe Summit up here about [unintelligible].” I believe we just entered the home and discovered two or more deceased people.

What is the location of this place? There is no address, but the operator was informed, “I’m going to wait for you at the gate.” Please send someone right away because I’m anxious to hear from you.

Is the subject a man or a woman? questioned the caller, the citizen repeating, “A female and a male probably, I don’t know,” Just send someone up here right away, sir.

The 911 dispatcher responded, “Okay, are they awake?” while the caretaker responded, “I have no idea.” The caller responded, “I have no idea, I’m not inside the house,” when the operator inquired as to whether they were “breathing.” It is locked and closed. She’s laying down on the floor from the window, but I can’t get inside because I can’t see them.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s responded to the call and confirmed the deaths in a statement that read, “On February 26, 2025, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, and a dog were found deceased.”

Later, it was discovered that Gene and Betsy were both in a similar state of decomposition and that she was found lying in a similar position, with bloating on her face and mummification on her hands and feet. The actor and his late wife have been cleared of any external trauma, but a cause of death has not yet been determined.

Gene’s family had previously been unsure whether the tragic deaths were caused by a gas leak, but that theory seems untrue. The Santa Fe City Fire Department said in a report that they found no indications of a potential carbon monoxide leak despite having been tested to determine whether one existed.

According to the report, “He advised the fire department that there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated with the pipes in and around the residence.” Sheriff of Santa Fe, Aron Mendoza, stated, “We’re not going to guess this was caused by a car accident or by natural causes.” It wasn’t unusual, either.
