Men’s Under-20 Six Nations
France (26) 31
Tries: Cazemajou 2, Rates, Frier, Garault Cons: Keletaona 3
England (21) 28
France sealed a first Under-20 Six Nations Grand Slam since 2014 with a thrilling victory over England in La Rochelle.
Les Bleus had the title secured on 26 minutes, with a fast start gaining four tries and the required bonus point.
Dylan Cazemajou, who crossed twice, Melvyn Rates and Timeo Frier all scored tries to take the hosts out of second-placed Ireland’s reach.
Despite racing into a 21-0 lead, England responded through tries by Tyler Offiah and Jimmy Staples.
Elliot Williams’ score from close range again pegged back France, with Nick Lilley’s converted try putting Andy Titterrell’s side in front.
The hosts, who secured back-to-back titles for the first time in their history, looked nervy as they missed two penalties to regain the lead.
Saracens wing Noah Caluori then produced a stunning try-saving tackle to deny what looked a likely score in the corner, and hat-trick of tries, for Cazemajou.
However, a late try by Gabin Garault ensured the Under-20 side went one further than the senior team.
“We watched the senior team together on Saturday and promised we would win the Grand Slam,” La Rochelle’s Garault told BBC Sport.
“[Scoring here at a packed Stade Marcel-Deflandre makes it] the most beautiful night.”
England’s defeat by Wales in the final match of last year’s tournament denied them a Grand Slam and handed the title to France.
