BBC Radio star Scott Mills revealed they ‘can never’ play Malta’s song entry for this year’s Eurovision due to BBC rules.
Miriana Conte was selected to represent Malta at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with a song that’s attracted attention on social media over one particular lyric and how it’s pronounced. The country recently held its annual televised national final, with singer Miriana, 24, having been among the candidates in the selection process.
She went on to win with the song Kant (Singing), meaning that she will represent Malta in Basel in May, following Switzerland ‘s victory at Eurovision last year. Most of the catchy track is performed in English, except for the chorus – and its title – include ‘Kant,’ which is said to be the Maltese word for ‘singing’.
The chorus has her singing: “ I do it all the time, yeah, I do it all the time. Serving kant. Do, re, mi, fa, s-s-serving kant.” The song has shocked and delighted Eurovision fans but many won’t be able to hear it on the radio due to the fact the word ‘kant’ sounds extremely similar to an offensive term in English.

Speaking about the Eurovision entry on The Scott Mills Breakfast Show, Scott said: “We can’t talk about Malta’s one, at all. We definitely can’t play a clip of it… ever, on the BBC. As for the UK entry… When is it going to be announced? Don’t look at me! I don’t know anything.”
Fans took to social media to share their thoughts, with one user writing on X: “That sounds like too much whining for a song that barely has any offensive lyrics (Kant isn’t even English fyi),”and another joking: “I swear to god if the BBC doesn’t broadcast Malta this year, I’m leaving the f**king country.”
Others reacted to the song on social media, with one hitting out: “Let’s not kid ourselves… we know exactly why she’s using it, especially considering the word before it is in plain English. Yes it’s a play on words, but it’s going to be changed imo.” Another loved the song and said: “Haha this is outrageous in the best way.”
Following the news that she had been chosen to represent her country, Miriana said in a clip shared on Instagram: “Hello Eurovision fans! It’s Miriana Conte from Malta. I’m so excited and so grateful that I just won the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and I’m super super excited to meet you all in Basel.”
