Nicki Chapman, the star of Escape to the Country, has cautioned others to ignore their health concerns after discovering that she has a migraine and a tumor in her brain.
The 58-year-old TV host underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2019 after serving as a judge on the world-famous singing competitions Popstars and Pop Idol alongside Simon Cowell. By the time she had her surgery, the growth had the size of a golf ball, but fortunately, the tumor was benign.
Nicki has weighed in on her health battle and stated that she ignored warning signs that something was wrong. When she grew forgetful and confused, she assumed she was overly tired.
And she dismissed her problems on a migraine when she became so confused that she couldn’t remember when she arrived at work. However, the truth was that she was developing a potentially life-threatening.
Gabby Logan’s opening on The Mid. Point podcast, Nicki explained her initial dismissal of her symptoms. She recalled: “Mine was really really quick, even though the tumour had been there for a long time, it wasn’t until I started to lose my sight, and I got lost walking down the street, and I couldn’t talk, but I sort of kept thinking, oh it’s because I’m tired”.
She claimed that because she takes pride in being a professional, it took a missed work appointment to make her believe something was wrong. The former singing judge had been scheduled to perform a voiceover for Escape to the Country, but he had vanished from the recording session.
Nicki recalled: “I never miss a meeting, they rang me up and said, ‘ Where are you? ‘ and I said, ‘ I’m at home’. They’re like, ‘ You’re meant to be here’. I was like, ‘ Oh my goodness, how embarrassing! ‘” She became more concerned when the usual five-minute walk to the studio ended in her absence and she lost track of her contacts when she finally arrived.
Nicki recalled: “Each time I made excuses for my behaviour… So I thought I was having a migraine. Again, I made excuses for]my symptoms] and we’re talking days, we’re not talking months. Alarm bells suddenly rang out when I got up the next morning and turned on my computer but was unable to read it. I was like ‘ Shack (her husband) we’ve, got a problem here'”.
Nicki finally made the decision to seek medical care, and she was immediately contacted by A&, E with concerns that she might have had a stroke after explaining her symptoms to her doctor. Nicki recalls: “And then it was like, you actually haven’t had a stroke. You’ve got a brain tumour”.
A non-cancerous tumour from her brain, which had continued to grow and have impacted her organ, had been removed through surgery. Since recovering from surgery, Nicki has a scan every 18 months to keep up with her health.
