England’s Beaumont calls for three Tests in Women’s Ashes

Tammy Beaumont, the England batter, and Ash Gardner, the all-rounder for Australia, have demanded that the Women’s Ashes include more Test matches.

The current multi-format series, which has been in place since 2013, consists of three one-day internationals, three T20s and a one-off Test.

The final test, which is played in white-ball, is played for four points, which could leave one team knowing a draw would seal the series while the other would need to force a victory. Each of the two white-ball matches is worth two points, while the other is only required to win.

“I’d love to see three matches of each format”, said Beaumont, who is on her third tour of Australia.

The narrative and the rivalries that develop over time are what make the Ashes’ best.

Being an opener, trying to get one up on a bowler, and playing Test cricket makes that happen more frequently, is what you love about. I always want to play more of the whites because I enjoy putting them on whenever I get the chance.

Women’s Tests are played infrequently – England captain Heather Knight is their most capped player with 13 since 2011 – and Australia’s Gardner said that the one-off Test can sometimes feel like” a formality”.

It would be challenging to fit it in with our busy summers, said Gardner, who won the series against the Ashes in 2023 after taking 23 wickets off-spin.

” Our two teams match up really well, we’ve had some really good matches against England in white-ball cricket. It would be cool to see that in comparison to a Test series because a one-off match can occasionally feel a little out of the ordinary.

Australia won the opening five-day Test of the 2023 Ashes at Trent Bridge, but England fought back with impressive white-ball series victories and the series was 8-8.

Beginning on January 30th, the Melbourne Cricket Ground will play a day-night match at the same venue for the upcoming series.

A draw would be sufficient for Australia to reclaim the trophy in order for England to win it for the first time in a decade.
