Following a humiliating Ashes series defeat to Australia, where they won 16-0, England have fired head coach Jon Lewis.

After a review of the tour led by England’s director of women’s cricket Clare Connor, Lewis was appointed in November 2022.

Last week, the former England seamer had a meeting with Connor and Jonathan Finch, the company’s manager.

Lewis is the first person to go through an Ashes series since the introduction of the multi-format points system in 2013. This humiliating tour of Australia marked the first time either team has lost every match in a series.

That destruction occurred at the conclusion of a winter that saw England suffer a disastrous early exit from the T20 World Cup.

In their defeat by West Indies, which resulted in group elimination, they were sadly cost dearly by a string of missed catches.

While captain Heather Knight predicted a while before making a decision about her future, 49-year-old Lewis stated his desire to continue as head coach after the Ashes.

Under a new coach, Knight might continue to serve as skipper.

Lewis expressed his satisfaction with the England head coach’s performance.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to continue developing this young team while also growing the women’s game in this country. This is a very difficult but enjoyable task.

Former England A team captain Charlotte Edwards and identically named Jon Lewis, both of whom are considered candidates for Lewis’ replacement.

Mark Robinson, who led England to glory at the World Cup in 2017, abruptly quit Warwickshire and is now focusing solely in Sussex.

Before a 50-over World Cup in India in the fall, the new coach will face home white-ball matches against West Indies and India this summer.

Whoever succeeds in taking over will aim to bring an end to a eight-year trophy drought that included the 2017 World Cup triumph.

More than three years ago, Lewis took over from Australian Lisa Keightley as fast-bowling coach for the England men’s team.

In his first T20 World Cup appearances, England failed to reach a final despite winning a drawn Ashes series against the dominating Australians in 2023.

Former England spinner Alex Hartley, who played in the World Cup-winning side last year, claimed some members of the squad were insufficiently fit after being eliminated from the T20 World Cup last year.

When questioned about the “cultural difference” between his country and Australia, Lewis responded that fitness was a factor in the gulf.

The Ecclestone incident was then called “unfortunate,” and Connor then promised an “honest review” of the series.

Connor acknowledged Lewis’ success in the T20 World Cup and Ashes’ poor results despite praising his one-day international series record.

Under his leadership, the team defeated Australia in the 2023 Women’s Ashes, which attracted record crowds with an entertaining style of cricket, and the team consistently won eight ODI series victories, which he should give real credit, she said.

There is no denying that the talent we have is there, and we will look to appoint a replacement soon, despite the recent disappointments with the T20 World Cup and the Women’s Ashes in Australia.
