El-Rufai Alleges Lack Of Internal Democracy In APC

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC), lacks internal democracy and active party structures.

El-Rufai addressed a national conference on promoting democracy in Nigeria at a conference in Abuja.

El-Rufai, who posted the report to his X handle on Tuesday, claimed that the country’s current situation was a “national emergency” and that APC had abandoned its founding principles and promoted subpar leadership.

“The APC is no longer my name.” No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show, it’s a zero-man show”.

The former governor criticized the political party’s leadership style and attributed it to unqualified delegates.

“You cannot afford to have illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people as your leaders. He claimed that this is the reason why we have today’s weak leadership.

El-Rufai urged political parties to set higher standards for candidates and delegates, noting that a secondary school certificate should not be necessary for party nominations under the Constitution.

Reflecting on the party’s foundation, El-Rufai said the APC was originally established to combat corruption, rebuild the economy, and enhance security. He, however, said the goals have been abandoned.

“The issues that led to the APC’s formation are still unresolved, but I don’t think the APC is interested in addressing them.” The distance between me and the party is widening”, he revealed.

El-Rufai also urged opposition parties to band together and form a strong coalition to challenge the ruling party and defend democracy.

“The PDP employs internal mercenaries who are motivated to annihilate the party. Similar issues exist for the Labour Party. Peter Obi himself told me, ‘ I don’t know what’s happening in the party I contested with. ‘

” There seems to be a deliberate project to destroy opposition parties, “he alleged.

Citing a poll that revealed 75% of registered voters might abstain from the 2027 elections, El-Rufai warned of an impending crisis.

” This is dangerous. We are aware of what it is for those of us who have experienced military rule for the majority of our lives. We don’t want a military rule, but we also don’t want civilians behaving like the military in their babbar riga and suits, “he said.
