Edo Election Petition Tribunal Relocates To Abuja
The state’s capital, Benin City, is moving to Abuja, the federal capital territory, according to the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.
A notice dated January 24, 2025, and signed by the Tribunal Secretary, Mu’azu Bagudu, informed parties to the case of the relocation.
The notice read in part, “I am directed to notify all parties that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has been relocated to Abuja at the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja, effective from Monday, 27th January, 2025”.
No reason was provided in the relocation notice.

Gunshots disrupted the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which began hearing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Benin City, the state capital.
Hoodlums reportedly spotted leaving the tribunal’s turbo-charged location, where gunshots reportedly pour the air and make passengers flee for safety.
The tribunal had already heard the opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate’s election victory on September 21, 2024. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the tribunal’s principal challenger.
The poll’s outcome was determined by the electoral umpire INEC, who had given Okpebholo the lead with 291 667 votes, Ighodalo with 247 and 274 votes, while Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata came in a close second with 22, 763 votes.
