Louisa Lytton, a cast member, addressed James Bye’s emotional departure from EastEnders.

This week saw the BBC show celebrate its 40th anniversary, including a live broadcast on Thursday. Following an explosion at the Queen Vic pub, Martin Fowler, a long-running character played by James, 40, was killed off.

Fans expressed their grief over the plot, and James’ coworkers also addressed him after he left the show. Louisa, 36, whose role Ruby Allen played in the film since last year, has been dating Martin.

Following the broadcast, Louisa shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the episode on her Instagram account, including one that shows her posing alongside James. The co-stars were seen embracing as they entered the damaged pub on set of the show.

The actor, who first collaborated with James in 2018, expressed her grief over his departure from EastEnders in the caption. Alongside an emoji depicting a broken heart, Louisa wrote in her post: “No words really”. James was also tagged in by her.

Following the explosion, viewers earlier this week saw Ruby and Martin trapped inside the Queen Vic along with his ex-wife Stacey. Martin helped several loved ones escape, including Ruby, but he remained inside to help free Stacey, who had become trapped further inside the building.

Later, as they eventually made their way towards an exit, Martin was struck by a metal beam. When paramedics and firefighters tried to save him, he was seen struggling to breathe and his legs were crushed. Martin and Stacey waited, and he even proposed to marry her, claiming to have been given “code names” in the script to conceal their identities. They later shared a romantic dream and a future together.

However, towards the end of the episode, Martin passed away after the beam was lifted off his legs. Due to crush syndrome, Stacey was informed that during the procedure he was at risk of cardiac arrest. Among the other concerned outside the pub was Ruby, who, like Stacey, has a child with Martin and was awaiting updates on the inside. Stacey screamed before falling to the floor herself shortly before the episode’s end credits even started, and she allegedly received confirmation of his death as a result.

Following the news of his departure, James said in a statement: “Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the shows epic 40th anniversary – the time felt right. It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude. Thank you to all EastEnders fans for letting me play this role for so long, EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you. My heart will always be drawn to this fruit and vegetable man. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler”.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m., EastEnders airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Monday.
