Drogheda ‘do not associate’ with McGregor after cup photo
Conor McGregor, the MMA champion, broke up with Drogheda United after sharing photos of the trophy on social media.
McGregor, 36, posted the images on Instagram as he celebrated with his cousin Warren Davis, who was an unused substitute in November’s final.
The caption on McGregor’s Instagram post read: “How much is it to buy a league of Ireland team? I might buy two”.
Drogheda won the FAI Cup for the second time in the history of the club by defeating Derry City 2-0 in Dublin.
The League of Ireland Premier Division club stated in a statement that an FAI Cup-related social media post had been “attracted our attention.”
The club continued, “Those pictured are a close relationship to one of our first team players, who, like all of the other players, had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at various intervals,” adding the club.
“Drogheda United do not make any connections to the person who posted the social media post or to any unapproved companies that have been mentioned.”
A civil rape case was brought before an Irish jury in November.
The Irishman was ordered to pay 248, 000 euros (£206, 000) in damages.
