Today, Donald Trump and his wife Melania sat in front of the Pope’s funeral as they mused alongside other world leaders and royals in a state of mourning. The US President and First Lady had a brief exchange with the pontiff as footage of the funeral was broadcast around the world.

On Friday, the pair made their way to the Vatican to celebrate Melania’s 55th birthday. Prior to the historic event, Melania, a practicing Catholic, expressed her gratitude.

President Trump was spotted whispering to his wife Melania during the two-hour service in St. Peter’s Square. The world leader’s words have now been translated into English by a lip-reading expert.

Professional Nicola Hickling told The Express that Mr. Trump said, “I’ll go over and speak to him.” Melania responded with a quick “side eye,” but during the service she did not even acknowledge her husband verbally.

Before the historic religions ceremony, Trump was spotted shaking the hands of various leaders and having a close conversation.
However, earlier on in the day, Mr. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in an impromptu discussion minutes before the funeral that caught the attention of the audience.

The two leaders huddled in close conversation without aides in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, according to photos released by the Ukrainian presidency. The pair sat down metres from the Pope’s grave until the funeral service today, which was scheduled for 10 a.m. (9 a.m. BST).

The two men agreed to continue discussions in Rome at a later time, according to a Zelensky spokesman who said the meeting lasted for about 15 minutes. A spokesperson confirmed that “the teams are working on organizing that.”
