Phoenix Open – final round leaderboard
Thomas Detry, a Belgian golf player, won the Phoenix Open by a remarkable seven shots to claim his first PGA Tour title.
The 32-year-old carded rounds of 66, 64, 65 and 65 to finish 24 under par overall, ahead of Americans Daniel Berger and Michael Kim, who both ended 17 under.
Detry’s wife and two young children immediately congratulated him after four straight birdies in his six-under-par round.
“It’s incredible, it’s what dreams are made of”, Detry told Sky Sports. “That walk on the last hole was incredible”.
Jordan Spieth, a former world number one, and Christiaan, a South African, were tied for fourth place at 16 under.
Robert MacIntyre of Scotland, Will Chandler of the United States, and Justin Thomas of the United States, who carded a final round score of 67, placed in sixth place with Will Chandler.
Detry who had finished runner-up twice in 65 events, started the day with a two-shot lead in Scottsdale, Arizona.
“In the past, I’ve had many chances to succeed, but never was able to come to a conclusion.” I’m just so happy”, he added.
Detry’s first professional success since joining Thomas Pieters in the 2018 World Golf Championship.
When the 31-year-old birdied his fifth birdie of the day on the par-five 15th to briefly close the gap to just two shots, he was put under a slight pressure from his playing partner, Berger.
