Following President Donald Trump’s shocking proposal for the United States to annex Gaza and resettle its citizens, UN rights chief Volker Turk reaffirmed on Wednesday that deporting people from occupied territory was strictly prohibited.
Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel sparked a 15-month conflict, and Trump has repeatedly credited him with breaking the ceasefire agreement that came into force last month.
Trump claimed in a proposal that no details how he would evict more than two million Palestinians from Gaza and how he would reestablish it economically and militarily.
According to Turk, “It is crucial that we move toward the next phase of the ceasefire, release all hostages and arbitrarily detained prisoners, end the war, and reconstruct Gaza, in full accordance with international humanitarian law and human rights law,” said Turk in a statement.
Palestinians’ occupied Palestinian territories and Israel have endured intolerable suffering. Palestinians and Israelis need peace and security, on the basis of full dignity and equality”.

Turk, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said international law was “very clear”.
According to him, “the International Court of Justice recently underscored a new importance of the right to self-determination and is a fundamental principle of international law and must be protected by all states.”
It is strictly forbidden to forcefully transfer or deport people from occupied territory.
On Wednesday, Palestinians, Middle Eastern leaders, and governments around the world rebuffed Trump’s proposal to retake control of the Gaza Strip and resettle its citizens.
Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were holding discussions at the White House at the time of his announcement, which was audible gasps.
