
At least 30 people were killed in a tragic road accident on Saturday evening in Onipetesi, Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Government Area, on the Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway.
Two buses collided head-on, then burst into flames, killing all those on board, in a devastating collision.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday.
According to Ibitoye, preliminary investigations revealed that one of the vehicles involved in the collision was traveling in opposition to traffic.
He said: “Thirty people lost their lives in the accident. Twenty-eight persons were burnt beyond recognition, while two initially survived but later died on their way to the hospital”.
The commander made a call to all motorists to follow traffic laws and regulations and use caution while traveling on the expressway.
No survivors were hurt when the two commercial buses collided and burst into flames, according to an eyewitness account.
“We were nearby when a very loud noise occurred. On reaching the scene, we saw two vehicles that had collided, already burning, while some people inside were struggling to escape.
The only two survivors who survived were immediately taken to the hospital by FRSC officers who arrived shortly after. However, we later learnt that they also died, “a witness said.
Since the start of the year, there have been numerous deadly road accidents in Nigeria, resulting in significant casualties and property losses.
According to Persecondnews, 98 people died on January 19, 2025, while a tanker was crashing at Dikko Junction along the Niger-Kaduna states, scooping fuel from it.
At least 56 patients were transported to various hospitals for treatment because they had burns of various kinds.
