David Beckham has been given a knighthood once more, and Mirror readers have had plenty of comments about it this week.

One of the most recognizable sports figures has long been regarded as a sir-in-waiting for his contributions to football. Becks may not be that surprised that he was left out this year, but maybe.

He was savaging that year’s committee for omitting him from its New Years Honours list, according to leaks of 2017 emails. The ex-player is said to have branded them “unappreciative c***s” and added that he “didn’t care about being knighted” – though the ex-midfielder has claimed some of the leaked emails had been doctored.

The messages claim Beckham raged: “I expected nothing less. To be honest, this is a disgrace, and ten years ago, I would have acquired something like this. Katherine Jenkins, an opera star, was reportedly hit by him after receiving an OBE. What does Katherine Jenkins OBE stand for? attending the rugby and seeing the soldiers. F***ing joke”.

We emailed you to inquire about David Beckham’s potential knighthood. A hefty 2, 694 said no they didn’t think so, while 1, 357 said yes, he deserved it. Here are a few of the comments that many of you made on our original story:

AlanBigAl: “Definitely not and never. Unsung heroes – a big YES, always. All he thinks about is £££££’s and himself. ‘

Phid: “The entire system should be looked at because those who receive the honors have done it for their own good and have typically received a lot of money for doing it.” Many less well-known and less wealthy people are honored, which is understandable, but rich sportsmen and other figures who grovel for awards shouldn’t at all be honoured. However I’m sure Beckham’s begging will work eventually. “

Ghgig: “A knighthood is something that belongs to those who deserve it, and it is frequently seen as a tribute to years of subtle, honorable, and substantive devotion to your chosen field of specialization.” It might even come as a surprise. A person who has been at best devious with their interpretation of statute law, actively advocates for the award, and has a hissy fit when the award is made when it was expected should not receive a knighthood.

Rabbit10: “I believe he deserves to be a Sir in light of his contributions to both Unicef and football.”

RubyTuesday2:” I can’t understand when a lot of these ‘ stars ‘ get recognised just for doing their jobs. “

Supermom:” Finest example of ‘ The Emperor’s New Clothes ‘ I’ve ever seen! “

Joker0000:” In 2017 he criticised Katherine Jenkins for being given an OBE in the honours list. No, he definitely doesn’t deserve a knighthood. “

Spursman5:” Can’t see why he deserves a knighthood. Especially when he’s begging for it. “

Gareth Southgate, Beckham’s former England teammate, was honored this year with a knighthood for his contributions to the game. Previously, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Robson have all been awarded similar gongs for their role in the sport.

Keely Hodgkinson, a sportswoman, was also given an OBE, putting her on par with Beckham, who received an OBE in June 2003 for her contributions to the game. Former Everton boss David Moyes, former Manchester United boss David Moyes, and former Liverpool legend Alan Hansen received an MBE.

Helen Glover, one of the country’s greatest-ever rowers with more than 20 gold medals to her name, was honoured with an OBE in this year’s list. Martin Brundle, a former world champion, and Hannah Cockcroft, a former world champion, were also given the honor of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

What do you think? Is it time Beckham is given a knighthood? You have until May 30 to respond to our poll in the comments section below.
