Dancing on Ice’s Jayne Torvill shares health issues ahead of retiring with Christopher Dean
Prior to retiring alongside Christopher Dean, ice skater Jayne Torvill has discussed her health.
Jayne, 67, and Christopher, 66, have been skating together for decades but have announced that they will soon be retiring. In the new series of Dancing on Ice, which premiered last week, they will skate for the final time live on television.
Ahead of their retirement, the Olympic gold medalists have been reflecting on their careers in interviews. The pair’s recent teasing about it keeping them “fit and healthy” revealed that they have “never really stopped skating.” She however revealed that there are “aches and pains” every so often.
Speaking to Prima magazine, as reported by the Express, she said: “We’ve never really stopped skating, and if we’re in a period when we’re not training together, we both use the gym quite a lot and keep fit that way”. According to Jamie, their abilities are “always there” and “back” after a few hours of skating, even after some breakups.
Jayne added: “It’s a bit like riding the bike story. However, despite occasionally experiencing occasional aches and pains, we’ve done it our entire lives, and I think that’s a big benefit to keeping us healthy and fit.
In addition to their success in Maurice Ravel’s Boléro, Jayne and Christopher have won gold medals at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. The pals have also been world champions.
Christopher stated in an interview that was just released that this would be their final live skate on Dancing on Ice. We’re also going on our final tour this year, so we won’t be performing once more once we’ve finished our final ice-cap. There are lots of endings”. He added: “We’ve been doing it a long time and people our age shouldn’t be doing it now. We’re simply happy that we can continue to do it.
The pair will continue to appear on the ITV show’s judging panel alongside Diversity’s Ashley Banjo and former Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse despite their departure from Dancing on Ice. Jayne teased that the program resembled their “baby.”
Dancing on Ice is a “baby” for us because ITV approached us in the beginning and we collaborated to create this format to illustrate how it might operate. She added: “We didn’t know much about TV but they didn’t know how skating works so together, the programme developed and it’s great that we were there from the beginning”.
Their final tour, Torvill &, Dean: Our Last Dance, is set to run from April to July. On ITV and ITVX, Dancing on Ice will return on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
